Ergonomic Keyboards Design Tips

by Frank Barnett

Many of us spend a very significant part of our days on the computer. Many people consider computer work to be extremely safe given that you do not have to do very physically taxing work. This can lead to an extreme and misplaced level of complacency for those who perform such jobs. Such workers will often have sloppy work setups that tax their body in minor ways through out the day.

Since most of us spend a huge amount of our lives in a computer desk environment, this can amount to a tremendous degree of repetitive stress. Thus it is vital to take into account the ergonomics of our workspace in order to avoid unnecessary repetitive stress. Computer work is very safe if you have your workspace arranged to minimize stress and maximize your comfort.

Given that most computer workers do not have the right setup though they are at big potential for repetitive stress injury. Such injuries are easily avoidable via use of ergonomic keyboards and other healthy office setup practices. Most large companies will even bring in a consultant to help with your setup.

An ergonomic keyboard is especially important for those of us who spend most of the day typing. Ordinary keyboards repeatedly stress our wrists into an abnormal and uncomfortable position for an extended period of time. Thus, we can injure this highly sensitive body part if we do not allow it to relax in a natural position during work. An ordinary keyboard discourages this, whereas ergonomic keyboards permit your hands and wrists to rest at comfortable angles.

In addition to the keyboard itself you want to ensure your chair is at the right height, your feet rest properly, and your arms align properly with the keyboard. It is also very important that your monitor be positioned at the right height for maximum comfort. Such steps may seem trivial but given the amount of time you sit in front of the computer this could not be further from the truth.

Those workers who use computers a lot don't have to spend much to assure that they have ergonomic physical arrangements. The necessary devices are frequently covered by bosses and even where they're not, they still don't cost as much as safety gear in other fields. They are also far less expensive than doctor bills that result from a painful condition which develops due to the incorrect positioning of various parts of your body.

A common misconception about computing is that, since it is not difficult physical labor, it does not have its own stresses and physical challenges. However, computing often entails many hours of repetitive motion, which can lead to repetitive stress injury. Ergonomic keyboards can help prevent pain and injury to computer users because, unlike ordinary keyboards, they are contoured to permit the user's hands and wrists to rest in a more natural, comfortable position. Such keyboards are part of an integrated workspace setup that includes other elements such as correct chair height, foot rest position, and arms that align with the keyboard at the proper angle.
